Fossils are the remains of what were once living things.  Fossils could be of animals, people, or plants.  Over time, these remains become as hard as rock and can be dated by a variety of scientific dating methods to determine their age.  Fossils can be found in many different rock layers of the earth.  The deeper the fossils are found, the older the fossils.
